about this blog
This blog will represent a sort of documenting of the experience of bartending from the ground up. I started as a barback (glassy/dish) about half a year ago and just recently landed a job as a real bartender. I'll also try to breakdown and take notes of cocktails here and there with recipes. As with any good cooking blog, the recipe won't ever be hidden under 10 paragraphs of personal story or ads. I think that kind of stuff is really quite annoying, and if you're here to read the story and reaction you'll get it after a short run down of recipe and method behind whatever drink I'm putting down.
The other section will mostly be reviewing books, as I get them, tinctures and bitters I make or somehow get my hands on, and the general experience of the milieu of bartending in Sweden and having to navigate that under the umbrella of the alcohol retail Monopoly that is Systembolaget. But I'll try to keep most of my griping private as I'm more of someone that enjoys solutions more than complaints.
I'm hoping to get into bitters and tinctures, oils, fat washes, and other cutting edge material, but I still have quite a lot of experience to be had as a first year barman. But the principle at play is that I continue practicing the "art" and technique, and eventually my flavors will be quite a lot more refined. As Eminem once said "my shit is your hit." That's where I'd like to be, and there is no doubt in my mind that a guy like Em has spent most of his life simply writing poetry/rap. I'm starting a bit later than I might need to, but culinary experience, flavor combinations, and general willingness to learn should be able to sustain me until I can think on my feet. I still have a lot to learn, especially if this guy thinks an experienced bartender should know like 300-500 recipes haha.
Generally, I think this blog will be a little less edited, at least for now. I have yet to decide on any specific style of writing I may have for it, rather just kinda knowing the content I'll be going after publishing. Free thoughts about expensive drinks, one might be able to say. Right now though, it feels like a somewhat worthy investment. I've primarily been investing in having herbs, the right spirits, and other things that would be able to go in a huge variety of cocktails. Really it's not that fun to try to find stuff here, as I said, so ordering online might be the best way to go, and with long lead times that doesn't sound great either.
We'll see, maybe working at an established location will allow me to figure something out that will work.
